Did you know 22 New Zealanders have received the Victoria Cross Medal?
One of the 22 winners was Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu.
He was the first Maori soldier to receive this medal. He led his platoon to the lower hills, where he personally knocked out several machine gun posts. Even though he had injured his shoulder and leg, he never left his position. Unfortunately he was killed the next morning fighting another enemy. His medal was presented to his family later that year.
I think he was very brave, and deserved to win the medal.
I have earned a shield for my community service as a St John Cadet. Have you earned a medal/shield for anything?

I will have to check with Nan and Kuia to see if you are related. I know from helping you with your Pepeha that your ocean is called Moana-nui-a-Kiwa. Would be interesting to see if you are related through extended whanau. He sounds like a very brave man. Dad and I are very proud of your achievements through St John. You also received a medal for participating in the Mud Run earlier this year too.
ReplyDeleteI have received several medals for my participation in waking events such as the Colour Run, Skechers 12k event and Albany Lake Series. i am looking forward to adding more to my collection in 2018. Maybe you might be able to attend some events with me.
Great work!!
Kia ora Sam,
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredibly brave and influential man Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu was. What a proud moment it must have been for his family to be presented with the Victoria Cross for his incredible efforts. It sounds like you have also made your family proud with your amazing community service efforts. What kind of community services did you do to receive this shield? After reading a number of your posts, St John's Cadet sounds like a huge part of your life. You sound like you hold similar traits to Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu, such as bravery, generosity, and commitment. You could be well on your way to receiving a Victoria Cross Medal too. Have you thought about what you could do to receive this honour?
Have a beautiful day,
Megan
