Week 2 Day 1 Activity 2 - The Early Years - The Right to Vote

Thats Crazy that women in other countries where not allowed to vote until recently.
I think that is unfair, that they did not allow women to vote, as they thought women would make the wrong choices. The men were making wrong choices.  Everyone deserves to vote for their leader.

I think Kate Sheppard did the right thing, her actions allowed everyone in our country and now the world to have their say.

Could you imagine being Kate Sheppard and doing the same thing?  I know I would.

  1. Kia Ora Sam,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Kate Sheppard and the entire suffragette movement in New Zealand. I agree with you that everyone deserves the right to vote and the right to have their voice heard. As a woman I feel very lucky to live in New Zealand and to know that I have the same rights as men to buy property, drive, vote, etc.

I often wonder what it must have been like to be a woman hundreds of years ago...

Thank goodness there were strong women, like Kate, who stood up and fought for what they believe in. Today, we still see people standing up for what they believe in and protesting things that they feel are wrong. Have you ever seen footage on TV of a protest? One of my friends recently marched in a protest against people walking through the forests in West Auckland that have been affected by a disease. Apparently, many of our native kauri trees are at risk of dying from a disease that is carried in the soil. If people walk through an area they can introduce the disease into the soil and, ultimately, kill the trees in the forest. It's quite serious so my friend decided to protest and to ask that people stop walking through the diseased parts of the forest.

Have you heard about this problem with the Kauri trees before? I hope that they are able to solve it before more of our beautiful, natural trees succumb to the disease.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us, Sam. This is a really insightful post.

    Best,
    Rachel

    1. Hi Rachel,
Thank you for taking the time to read my posts. I have not heard about the Kauri trees problem. But will make sure the next time we go on a bush walk, that we are walking in the right areas and not spreading the disease. The last protest I saw on TV was the one where Tonga were trying to get a review on their match that they had lost.

  2. Hi Sam,

Oh, yes, I do remember seeing that protest on television as well. There are quite a few newsworthy events on TV these days. I was actually just walking on a track out in west Auckland this morning that had huge signs warning of the Kauri dieback. I had to spray my shoes really carefully as I walked along. I love going for walks out in the Waitakere Ranges as I live in Titirangi so the tracks are really close and convenient. I sometimes go for a walk at Waikowhai Park. Do you ever walk through the park?

Speaking of walks, Aronui has just come in and asked me to go for a walk to the local store. It's lunch time here and he's keen to buy a Popsicle to go with his meal. We'll be back in 10 minutes and I'll look forward to checking your site again to see if you've had time to post more activities on your blog.

    I hope so!

    Bye for now,

    Rachel :)

  3. It makes me really proud to hear your views on this topic. You are correct, everyone on our planet has the right to vote, work etc.
What is something that you are passionate about and wouldn't want taken off you or told you couldn't do it anymore?
