Week 2 Day 5 Bonus Activity - Coming to an End - Sweet Tooth

Today I am going to share the recipe for my favourite dessert

Strawberry Cheesecake YUM!

Recipe

Ingredients:
250g digestive biscuit
100g butter, melted
    1 vanilla pod
    600g cream cheese
    100g Chelsea Icing Sugar
    284ml cream
    Topping:
    400g punnet strawberry, halved
    25g Chelsea Icing Sugar
    Method:
      Base:
Butter and line a 23cm loose-bottomed tin with baking paper. Put 250g digestive biscuits in a plastic food bag and crush to crumbs using a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl, then pour over 100g melted butter. Mix thoroughly until the crumbs are completely coated. Tip them into the prepared tin and press firmly down into the base to create an even layer. Chill in the fridge for 1 hr to set firmly.

Remove the vanilla seeds from 1 pod: Slice the vanilla pod in half lengthways, leaving the tip intact, so that the two halves are still joined. Holding onto the tip of the pod, scrape out the seeds using the back of a kitchen knife.

      Filling:
Place 600g cream cheese, 100g Chelsea Icing Sugar and the vanilla seeds in a bowl, then beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Tip in 284ml cream and continue beating until the mixture is completely combined. Now spoon the cream mixture onto the biscuit base, working from the edges inwards and making sure that there are no air bubbles. Smooth the top of the cheesecake down with the back of a dessert spoon or spatula. Leave to set in the fridge overnight.

      Topping:
Bring the cheesecake to room temperature, about 30 minutes before serving. To un-mould, place the base on top of a can, then gradually pull the sides of the tin down. Slip the cake onto a serving plate, removing the lining paper and base. Purée half the 400g punnet strawberries in a blender or food processor with 25g Chelsea Icing Sugar and 1 tsp water, then sieve. Pile the remaining strawberries onto the cake, then pour over purée.

I hope you guys like strawberry cheesecake because I do!

Week 2 Day 5 Activity 2 - Coming to an End - Making a Fashion Statement

Fashion!

Today I will be comparing fashion from now (2017) with fashion from the 1940's.

2017

1940s

What do you think?  I don't think these clothes match at all to what we wear today.  There are different colours and the different looks. Back in the 1940s everything was simple and fancy and now things have different shapes and sizes plus different colors and screen prints.

in 65 years from now I think that most people will be wearing something like an iron man suit what would you think people will be wearing in 65 years from now.

Week 2 Day 4 Bonus Activity - Another World War - Women at Work

Imagining I am a nurse during WWII working on a large medical ship.  Here is my story:

One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang. You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you . . . . fall to the ground in horror.
The ship was in silence. . . . . .BANG! The ship splits into two pieces and starts tipping on its side. Screams of fear echoed through the room.
All the equipment starts tipping, bottle's smash and bandages fall off their shelves.
The ship has now fully tipped over and everyone is now standing on the roof! NOT FOR LONG?!?!!
The room starts to slowly fill up with water and everyone's first reaction was to go to the door, except it was locked! Then they go for the window it was locked as well, so one of the soldiers struggled to stand up and smashed the window. They all got out one by one and swam to land. Some of the soldiers helped us to get to safety and put us with the other survivors. Once everyone goes back to their trenches the soldiers helped the captain of the ship get the radio on to contact the others to send in another ship.
2:12 AM the new ship arrived and had a new crew of soldiers and nurses we were saved!

How would your story go if you had been on the ship?

Week 2 Day 4 Activity 2 - Another World War - A Call to Arms

Did you know 22 New Zealanders have received the Victoria Cross Medal?

One of the 22 winners was Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu.

He was the first Maori soldier to receive this medal.  He led his platoon to the lower hills, where he personally knocked out several machine gun posts.  Even though he had injured his shoulder and leg, he never left his position.  Unfortunately he was killed the next morning fighting another enemy.  His medal was presented to his family later that year.

I think he was very brave, and deserved to win the medal.
I have earned a shield for my community service as a St John Cadet.  Have you earned a medal/shield for anything?

Week 2 Day 4 Activity 1 - Another World War - An Eventful Experience

WWII

Many events happened over this time, I have chosen 2 events to blog about today.

The first event during WWII, I have chosen is the Invasion of Poland on 1st September 1939.

This started at 4.43am in the morning.  Germany sent over 1.5 million troops along the Polish border.  While at the same time the Germans bombed the Polish airfields.  German warships and u-boats attacked the naval forces too.  The Germans were lead by their Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.  Because of this attack, Britain and France then declared war on Germany.  Starting WWII.

United Nations formed 24th October 1945.  This is the second event I chose.
The United Nations was formed on this day, after WWII.  51 countries committed to international peace and security.  In hopes that another World War would not happen.

Do you guys like art? I do!
Today I will be judging a piece of artwork called art deco.

Now I have been asked to be an Art Judge

I give this piece of art a 3 out of 5.

I only gave this art a 3 because I don't like the different textures and colours on it I'd much rather prefer a sketch.

What do you think about the artwork do you like the way that it was done?

Week 2 Day 1 Bonus Activity - The Early Years - In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields Poem

I like this poem as it reminds me of the soldiers who fought for our country over 100 years ago.
It also makes me sad as they had to give their lives to help end the war and give us some peace.

How does this poem make you feel?

Week 2 Day 1 Activity 2 - The Early Years - The Right to Vote

Thats Crazy that women in other countries where not allowed to vote until recently.
I think that is unfair, that they did not allow women to vote, as they thought women would make the wrong choices. The men were making wrong choices.  Everyone deserves to vote for their leader.

I think Kate Sheppard did the right thing, her actions allowed everyone in our country and now the world to have their say.

Could you imagine being Kate Sheppard and doing the same thing?  I know I would.

Week 2 Day 1 Activity 1 - The Early Years - St Joseph's Cathedral

Too many to choose from.
Today's posts I had to chose a famous Cathedral and share some facts about it. I have chosen Notre Dame Cathedral.

Firstly I would like to share why I chose this one.  I have learnt lots about France, and would like to travel there one day.  This is one place I would like to visit while I am there.

Notre Dame is located in Paris, France. 1160 they made the decision to build Notre Dame.  3 years later they started building in 1163.  It took almost 200 years to complete.

Week 1 Day 5 Bonus Activity - The Dawn of an Era - #EarnTheFern

Did you know the Commonwealth Games started in Canada in 1930?

In 1966 a man called Bill Kini won a Gold Medal for being the best Heavyweight Boxer at the Commonwealth Games.  I am now imagining I was a news reporter doing an interview with Bill Kini.

Image result for Bill Kini 1966

These are the questions I would like to ask him:

1. When did you start boxing and Why?
2. What was your first award you received for boxing?
3. If you hadn't started boxing what would you be participating in?
4. If you could give advice to someone wanting to start boxing what would you say to them?

Hope you like my questions.  Would you have asked something different?

Week 1 Day 4 Bonus Activity - Hitting a High Note - Musical Festivals Matatini

Judging is harder than I thought.
my next challenge on my summer learning journey is to rank three performances from previous te matatini festivals.

After watching 3 clips this is how I ranked them.

#3 My least favorite one out of the 3 clips was Te iti kahurangi.  My reason for this is because there weren't very many actions.  I did not like the music.

#2 The second favourite is Tamatea Arikinui.  There was lots more actions, but they repeated themselves over and over again.

#1 My favourite is the one that I really like.  Te Puku o Te IKa.  I really really liked the song and music.  There wasn't many actions but they were all different.

Have you been to one of the Matatini festivals before?  I think I would like to attend one some day.
Follow my Summer Learning Journey for more information.

The second person I chose was my dad, Sam
He likes to rest, because he works hard all year round.
Secondly he likes to go camping with our family, and swimming at the beach at Nan's house. He likes doing this with us as it was something he remembers doing as a child.

Extra fun fact about a family member - My Great Nan - Sophie was awarded a Queen Service Medal a few years ago for her work with the Ministry of Fisheries.

Week 1 Day 4 Activity 1 - Hitting a High Note - The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart

Hello my followers, today's blog is about traditional Maori Waiatas.  I had to choose which was my favourite and why.

I have chosen a waiata that we do for St John Youth Programme.

Tenei Matou – St John Waiata

Tenei Matou
Tenei matou te hunga rangitahi O Hato Hone ē
Nei ra te karanga
Nei ra te karanga, ki te whanau whanui, aku teina, aku tuakana ē
Ko Hato Hone
Ko Hato Hone, manaaki tuatahi, kaupapa rangatira ē
Ko Hato Hone, manaaki tuatahi, kaupapa rangatira ē
Ko Hato Hone, Hato Hone, Hato Hone ē HI!

English Translation
We the Youth of St John
Call to our extended family our brothers and sisters
We are St John, Caring for those in need a noble calling
We are St John, Caring for those in need a noble calling
We are St John, St John, St John

This is my favourite because this is the song of St John, it is sung by the St John Youth cadets.  This year we sung it at prize giving and it is normally sung at special events. Being a youth cadet myself, it is special to me.  Don't forget to follow my blog to see more of the challenges for my Summer Learning Journey.
