Week 1 Day 4 Activity 2 - Hitting a High Note - Playing Games

Hey guys this blog is about old traditional maori games.
I will tell you what it is two of the rules that apply and what the actual purpose of the game.

The game that I have chosen is a game called Poi Rakau.

This game is when you pass a sharpened rakau around the circle without hitting any one or any one dropping it.
You can have as many players as you like.

1 person in the middle (putahi) of the group passes out to the circle.
If the (putahi) person passes with their right hand, then the catcher must catch with their left hand and pass to the next person on their left, that person passes back to the middle.
Other actions can be added, such as leg lifts or head tilts and the catcher must copy Noises can also be added Jumping actions or clapping before the catch.

What games do you like to play?

  1. Kia Ora Sam,

Thanks for sharing the rules of Poi Rakau with us today. It looks like it's a pretty difficult activity to master. I personally love to play board games and other sporting games like basketball, tennis and volleyball. I grew up in Canada so we learned how to play ball sports from an early age with the exception of rugby. It isn't a very popular sport at home. Interestingly, neither is netball or cricket.

Are you a fan of rugby, netball and/or cricket? Have you ever played on a rugby or cricket team? I joined a netball team when I first moved to New Zealand but I really struggled with it because I was used to basketball so I always tried to dribble the ball (something that you are not supposed to do in netball, I quickly learned)!

I hope that you are able to get outside today in the sunshine and enjoy some time playing with family and friends. I am hoping to get out for a walk to the park later with Aronui (my son). We try to go once a day to shoot hoops while the schools are on holiday and we have the whole basketball court to ourselves :)

    Until next time,

    Rachel

    1. Hi Rachel, I haven't really played in any sports teams. I do like touch rugby, soccer and scootering. I have also completed a Mud Run, and like going for walks with my mum. She has already entered us as a family to complete the Round the Bays next year.

I hope you enjoyed your walk to the park with your son.
      Thanks
      Sam

  2. Kia Ora Sam,

Thanks for the note. I have actually completed the Round the Bays each of the last six years. I love it! I must admit that it's pretty crowded at the starting line but things always thin out and it's a lot of fun to march around Tamaki Drive with thousands of other people. How many people in your family will be completing the Round the Bays next year? Will you all walk/run together?

I hope that you are able to get out and enjoy the sunshine today. It's a perfect day for scootering down the road or kicking a soccer ball at the park. Aronui and I had a great time at the park yesterday. Thanks so much for thinking of us!

All the best to you and your family for a happy and healthy new year. It's hard to believe that it's almost 2018 already!

    Bye for now,
    Rachel :)

  3. This game sounds really interesting, its not one I have heard of before. I found it fascinating learning about it from your post.
Games I used to play when i was a child was hopscotch and elastics. They were my favourite. These days i prefer games that take more thinking and creativity.

Maybe you could create your own game. That would be fun to see.

  4. Hi Romana and Sam,

I think that you've come up with a great idea, Romana. Sam, do you think that you could create your own game? That really would be so fun to see!

Wishing you both a very happy new year. All the best for 2018!

    Cheers,
    Rachel
