Hello, my next activity as part of the Summer Learning Journey, is to write a letter to a friend, imagining I am travelling on a Waka to New Zealand. Here is my letter:
Dear Friend,
I am very scared, as I am afraid of the water. I wish our family had been able to stay at home. I don't feel well at all, leaving my friends and other family behind. The Waka is very long and skinny, but not much room to move. It is freezing because I am surrounded by water, and big gusts of wind.
We have to be careful with how much we eat, to make sure we have enough to last the trip.
All I can see is dark blue water. It appears to go on for miles. There is no land in sight.
I hope we get to New Zealand soon. I have heard it is a very green country with lots of trees and mountains. I will write to you again soon.
Your friend
Sam
I hope you enjoyed reading my letter. Would you be scared to voyage on a Waka?

Week 1 Day 1 Activity 1 - Arriving in New Zealand - The First Settlers
After reading the myth of Maui and the Giant Fish (also known as The Fish of Maui) 3 facts I learnt about Maui were
- He never gave up
- Maui's canoe formed the South Island
- His fish hook was given to him by his Grandmother Murirangawhenua
The other myths about Maui that I have read or heard are
- How Maui Found his Mother
- How Maui Found the Secret of Fire
- How Maui Slowed the Sun
I would like to read other Maui myths. Comment below with your favourite Maui Myths.
