Week 4 Day 2 Bonus Activity - A Decade of Sports - Shake It Off

Have you tried Zumba??  I have it is so much fun.  I didn't know that it was made up of other types of dance.

I have chosen one of those dance styles called Soca.

Soca was created in Trinidad, by a man named Garfield Blackman, who rose to fame as Lord Shorty.  He created Soca around 1972/73.  He tried to improve the traditional style of calypso. Soca is also known as Soul of Calypso.

It now continues to blend into contemporary music styles and trends. and has been experimented into disco, Bollywood films and Punjabi Pop.

There are also several different types of Soca,

  • Bashment Soca
  • Chutney Soca
  • Ragga Soca
  • Parang Soca
  • Steelband Soca
  • Groovy Soca
  • Bouyon Soca
  • Power Soca

  1. Hey Sam,

What an fascinating style of dance that you decided to research. I have never heard of Soca before. It was very interesting learning some facts about Soca music and watching a few you-tube clips of the dancers. I can definitely see how Zumba incorporates Soca into the style. Do you think you would participate in a Soca dance class? I think I would love to have a go the music is very soulful and lively.

Thank you so much for sharing information about Soca. Be mindful not to copy directly from any reference source as this is plagiarism - you must remember to put all ideas into your own words.

I hope you have a great day,
    Megan :)
