Week 3 Day 5 Activity 1 - Maintaining the Status Quo - Hiking Tongariro

Tongariro Crossing

Thinking about hiking the Tongariro Crossing.  Here is a list of a few items that you will need.

1. Food and water - very important to keep up your energy and to keep hydrated.
2.Cellphone - in case of an emergency.
3. Suitable clothing such as Jackets, strong sturdy shoes, and warm clothing.
4. First Aid Kit - for any type of injury
5. Map - to keep track of where you have been and where you are going

I would also make sure I was fit enough to complete the walk.  I would check the weather.  I would make sure someone knew where I was going to be and roughly what time I would be back.  Lastly have a plan in place, including transport, rough time of return, emergency supplies, contacts and learning about the walk before I go on it, so I have a little idea of what to expect.

My mum was thinking about doing this crossing before she injured her ankle.  She had thought about taking me with her.  But she wasn't sure if my fitness level was ready.  Maybe next year her and I can do it together.

Do you know of any other hikes that  you can do in New Zealand?  Have you done any of them.

  1. Kia ora Sam,

The quality of your blog posts have improved so much since the beginning of the Summer Learning Journey. I thoroughly enjoy reading your activities every day and seeing what facts you come up with.

If you were to complete the Tongiriro Crossing tomorrow I think you would be very well prepared. Your backpack would be full of important equipment that you would definitely need on this hike. Your mum is right, you do have to be fit to walk this track as it is 19km up a mountain. However, it is definitely something that you could aim to do next year. Have you done any other hikes before?

A friend of mine has completed the Te Araroa trial, which is a 3,000km walk from the top of the North Island to the very bottom of the South Island. It took him 3 months to walk the entire country. I had never heard of this track before he completed it but apparently it is a very well used track. On some days he would walk up to 40km. I was inspired and amazed by Alex who was only 23 years old. Check out this link to the Te Araroa trail page https://www.teararoa.org.nz.

Another amazing post Sam, keep up the awesome work.

    Enjoy your day,
    Megan :)

    1. Hi Megan,

I have not done any hikes before. We do go on bush walks and every day walks. So I would have to do lots of training before the Tongariro Crossing. I have heard of the Te Araroa Trail. We used it at school for part of one of our learning activities. I had to plan travel, accommodation, hire cars and activities along the way. I had a budget of $500 per day.
It was very exciting seeing all the things you could do along the way.

      Have you done any hikes?

      Sam
