Activity 1 Bee informed

Bee-tectives!
We are going to research and find the missing information to these five sentences-

The word "bumblebee" is a compound word (Bumble+Bee). The word 'Bumble' means to Hum, buzz or drone

Bumblebee's can fly very quickly. they can reach ground speeds of 54 Kilometres per hour (km/h)

Bumblebee's are very strong! they carry up to 90 percent of their own body weight with them to avoid starvation.

Bumblebee's can work and collect more pollen than other bees, including honey bee's. in fact, 50 times as much work as a normal honey bee's.

The number of Bumblebee's is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the removal of wild flowers and flowering trees, Habitat loss, and extensive use of pesticides.

thanks for coming to see my blog, if you think I got some wrong please tell me and I will fix it up for you!

  1. Hi Sam,

Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I'm reading your blog from Canada where we're in the middle of a cold winter's day. There are no bumblebees flying around our house or gardens, needless to say...

You've done a super job researching the answers to the questions about bumblebees. Well done!!

Isn't it too bad that these most important creatures are disappearing??? Without bumblebees a lot of our plants won't be fertilized and that means that the amount of food grown for us could be less. That's a scary thought!!

We have the same problem here in Canada. We're very worried about our bee populations and what their loss would mean for us. We rely on these tiny creatures for the food on our tables. So we need to be very mindful of what we do to the land around us, don't we?!!

I'm so glad that you've chosen to be part of the Summer Learning Journey this summer and that you're learning about all of these things. It will be you and your classmates who will continue the work that needs to be done to reduce our impact on the earth.

Here in Canada we're trying to plant more flowers that are good food sources for bees, and we're passing laws that ban the use of pesticides and other chemicals that harm bees and other insects. We need to work with people in countries like yours to come up with more and better ideas as to how to support bee populations.

I hope you're having fun outside during this holiday time and that you're seeing lots of bees in the gardens in your neighbourhood.

I'll continue to enjoy reading your blog!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

  2. Hello Samuel,
These are some really cool fatcs that I've heard many times, but have never gotten old. I really like your presentation of our facts because it is very easy to read.

My personal favourite fact is the one where they can reach ground speeds of 54km an hour! I also like how the word bumble means something so strange like buzz or drone.

Something you have gotten wrong is that bees go 54km an hour and they can carry 90% of their body weight, as well as they can do 50% more work than honeybees.

    Happy Blogging

  3. Hi Samuel,
Well done on finishing this activity. You did a good job filling in the blanks for the bumblebee information. I also like how you put your answers in red so we could tell what you wrote. What was your favorite fact about the bumblebees? Keep up the good work.

  4. Hi Samuel!
Congrats on completing this activity.I like how you got the answers correct. Do you like bees? I don't because on the last day of school (2018) I got stung by a bee. How hard was it to find the answers to these questions?

    1. Hi
I like bees because they are mystical and without them we likely would not survive.

  5. Hi Sam,

I found this really interesting. I did not realise bumblebees could travel that fast. Next time we are in the car I will show you the speed they can go up to, as most of the time that is the speed we drive around in our car.

Did you discover any facts that you didnt know before?
